What Therapy Feels Like: A Guide for First-Time Clients in Ontario
Starting therapy can feel like a big step.
If you’ve been searching for things like “what is therapy like?” or “what to expect in a first therapy session,” you’re not alone. A lot of people are interested in therapy but hesitate because they don’t know what it actually feels like.
This post will walk you through what to expect.
It’s not as formal as you might expect
A common misconception is that therapy feels clinical or intimidating, like you’ll be analyzed or judged the moment you start talking.
In reality, therapy is a conversation.
You don’t need to prepare anything or say things a certain way. Whether you feel overwhelmed, unsure, or don’t know where to begin, you can show up exactly as you are.
We figure it out together.
You don’t need to have everything figured out
Many people start therapy without a clear explanation of what’s wrong.
You might be thinking:
“I don’t even know where to start”
“I just feel off”
“Nothing is technically wrong, but I don’t feel like myself”
That’s more than enough to begin.
Therapy helps you slow things down and make sense of what’s been sitting underneath the surface.
It’s not just talking, it’s reconnecting with yourself
A lot of us spend most of our time in our heads—overthinking, analyzing, and trying to “figure things out.”
But not everything can be solved through thinking alone.
In our work together, we also pay attention to how your experiences show up in your body. This might look like noticing tension, restlessness, or feeling disconnected, and learning how to come back to a more grounded state.
This is a more body-based (somatic) approach to therapy, which can be especially helpful for anxiety, stress, and burnout.
There’s no pressure to perform in therapy
You don’t have to say the “right” thing.
You don’t need to make progress every session.
And you don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy.
Some sessions will feel more open and talkative, others quieter and reflective. Both are part of the process.
A note on getting started
If you’ve been thinking about starting therapy but keep putting it off, that’s completely normal.
You don’t need to be fully ready. You don’t need a perfect reason.
You just need a place to start.
